June 5, 2009 by Nikki Katz

It’s another extra from the Prison Break Season 4 DVD! This one is Fade Out: The Final Episode.

The actors and producers discuss closing out the series and having advance notice that Season 4 would be the last.

Matt Olmstead says, “This is a real wrap up for Prison Break. One that we knew at the beginning of the season. Every scene and every episode have been in service of the big wrap up.

Robert Knepper felt that Season 4 had so many twists and turns, and ultimately was more exhausting! Wentworth Miller thought it was great how they went back to the previous seasons to tie up some loose ends as well.

It’s the scene where the team arrives back at the warehouse and Sucre has been shot. Amaury lifts up his shirt to show Sarah Wayne Callies where the fake bullet is.

It’s fun to see the actors talk about the scene and then film it!

Prison Break’s Social Media Strategy!

May 28, 2009 by Nikki Katz

422pbfinale_Sc51_0064.jpgIt seems that Fox cleverly employed social media by leaking spoilers to generate interest in the series finale and upcoming Prison Break: Final Break!

The studio relied on a well-timed social media strategy, including using networking services like Twitter and online forums to engage fans. Fox’s subtle approach dovetails with the findings of a recent Knowledge Networks study reporting that social media works better for brand-building than direct sales or tune-in pitches.

For Prison Break, they leaked bits about Michael’s death to get fans buzzing about the rumors. Steven Melnick, Senior VP of marketing at 20th Century Fox Television chatted with Beet.TV. He said that Fox used social media to both monitor and then shift word-of-mouth chatter about the show. Posting a photo of Michael and Sara’s wedding led to a whole new slew of social networking activity and subsequent interest in the DVD release.

To most effectively engage and ultimately activate the fan base, it is better to surprise them with a piece of content…that will keep the blogosphere alive, rather than giving them a promotional on-sale message which rarely has that effect,” he told Beet.TV. “It puts them in the position of evangelists for the property rather than merely consumers of it.

Michael Was Always Slated to Die

May 21, 2009 by Nikki Katz

422pbfinale_Sc46_0113.jpgThe Man recently revealed that Michael was always slated to die.

I’m not actually sure what direction the show would have taken if there had been no writers strike. I am pretty sure that Sara would not have come back though. I think Michael still would have died, since the ultimate ending of the show was decided a long time ago and they always planned to stick with their original ending idea.

Without the strike we may have seen the introduction of different characters and the way the show reached its ending may have been different.

Beyond that, I don’t know anything specific.

Matt Olmstead Talks Series Finale

May 16, 2009 by Nikki Katz

422pbfinale_Sc51_0064.jpgMatt Olmstead answers a LOT of questions about the series finale! TVGuide.com and EW both have interviews with Matt that they have revealed.

I can now somewhat understand their reasoning for killing off Michael. But you know what - everyone’s hands were dirty. Even Sara killed someone. It doesn’t mean they needed to kill off everyone!

TVGuide.com: At what point during the four-year run did you decide that Michael would die in the end?
Matt Olmstead: At the beginning of this season, we had a debate about it. I was on NYPD Blue and I came on during Season 6, which was Jimmy Smits’ last arc — and it was some of the best TV ever. They had the thought that when a character goes that’s beloved, if you drop a safe on his head, the audience is going to hate you, because they haven’t had a chance to mourn. So let’s show up early that the character has a [health] problem. [NYPD Blue creator] David [Milch] did it brilliantly [with Smits' character dying of heart failure], and I always remembered that. So when we met with the writers after the [WGA] strike, we asked ourselves: Is Michael going to last? Either way, let’s [give him] a nosebleed in Episode 1. That way we can kind of suggest that something’s up, and it also gives us the opportunity to play some scenes — if we want to go down this road — where Sara can mourn it, Lincoln’s aware of it, and the audience is aware of it. Then they too have a chance to mourn the loss.

TVGuide.com: What was Wentworth Miller’s take on the matter?
Olmstead: He ultimately liked it. He had heard rumblings, and when that script went out, a complimentary email came back from him, because he saw the merits of it. The idea of Michael not making it stemmed from a conversation he and I had in Season 2. He said that at this point [Michael's] hands were as dirty as anyone’s, and that was something we addressed along the way, this mounting guilt. “I broke my brother out of prison, the ramifications of which have included people getting killed” — neither he the actor nor the character were ignorant or dismissive of that. So the idea of a finale where [in the coda] he doesn’t make it but everyone else does was the right ending for him as an actor. For Michael to have traipsed off into the sunset with Sara may have seemed a little like, “Hey, good for you guys.”

Prison Break - Episode 4.21/22: Rate of Exchange/Killing Your Number - Recap

May 15, 2009 by Nikki Katz

Prison Break
Episode 4.21/22: Rate of Exchange/Killing Your Number
Airs: May 15, 2009
Recap

Thanks to David G. for his recap:

Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the moment you and I have all been waiting for. The two hour series finale for Prison Break. I hope they settle everything nicely.

Last week, Christina proved she was a terrible mother by shooting Lincoln in the stomach.  Needless to say, Michael was not very happy. So he called her up, and told her he’d give her Scylla as long as Lincoln was taken care of.

The General was busy telling Sara how much has changed just because she left the infirmary door open in season 1.  How does he know about that?  When the General asked T-Bag to escort Sara out, T-Bag shuffled up to her and asked her to grab his pocket. Nice, two season 1 references in the first five minutes. In Chicago, we see Sucre being followed by someone unseen. Perhaps C-Note?
