So What’s a Fish?
When I first heard the residents of Fox River calling Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) as “fish”, I was totally clueless. Michael as a fish? Cos of his stench? He can swim like a fish or he has scales hid beneath his tattoo? Rather than trusting my fishy deductions, I decided to stop killing my brain cells and looked for the true connotation of fish.
And I found this Prison Slang 101 (you might like the song with it) as my saviour! So here’s the fishy meaning….
Fish : A new arrival, a first-timer, a bumpkin, not wise to prison life.
Plus many other prison definitions such as…
Rat/Snitch/Stool Pidgeon : n., informant. v., to inform.
Old School : Reference to the way prisons used to be, particularly more respect given to fellow prisoners, less informing, less horseplay. “he’s an old school convict,” meaning stand up or raised right.
Now I’m ready for Season 2 of Prison Break but…will they still use this prison slang when they are out of the prison?? Beats me.

Had me stumped at first, too, but in succeeding episodes, it becomes apparent that “fish” is the slang for “freshman” or “newbie”. Why Michael Scofield was singled out for that moniker may mean that there was nothing unusual about him other than his being new.

I didn´t need to think much to understand the meaning of “fish”! Because I think the cons think
about themselves as under humans, so, they call
themselves as several animals: rabbits (the old ones), fishes (the news) and j-cats (the jeopardy ones). And, of course, a fish is a con who hadn´t
been accepted by the rabbits, the community of cons.
